A Beacon of Hope: Baby Reese’s Triumph Over SMA
At Amirs Therapy Gym, we’re deeply moved and immensely proud to share the remarkable story of Reese Tan Rui Xin, lovingly known as Baby Reese. Her journey has captured hearts across the nation—now beautifully chronicled in a heartfelt 30-minute episode of Astro’s “Race to Save” which aired on June 28, 2025, at 9 PM (Channel 306)
In September 2022, Baby Reese was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 (SMA Type 2)—a rare and often life-threatening genetic condition that caused severe muscle weakness. She was unable to crawl, stand, or walk, and required respiratory support to breathe and eat. Medical experts urgently recommended Zolgensma, a groundbreaking one-time gene therapy, to be administered before she turned two
Faced with an overwhelming medical challenge and the high cost of treatment, Baby Reese’s family sought help from One Hope Charity and Welfare. In collaboration with Unicorn Media and Hexarus Creative Agency, they launched a nationwide fundraising campaign. The result? A wave of compassion and generosity met the RM9 million goal—enabling Baby Reese to receive the life-changing treatment at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC)
Today, Baby Reese is reportedly in stable and satisfactory health, showing encouraging recovery milestones—a testament to the power of collective goodwill. Fueled by the momentum of this successful campaign, Baby Reese’s mother plans to launch an SMA Foundation next year. Its mission is expansive: offer financial and educational support, promote pre-pregnancy genetic screening, and help families navigate the complexities of SMA with hope, not fear
