Electrical Stimulation Therapy: Rewiring Potential, One Pulse at a Time

Amirs therapy Gym (ATG) are proud to introduce Electrical Stimulation Therapy (E-Stim) — a powerful, evidence-based tool in neurorehabilitation now offered by our skilled and certified therapists. Therapists have undergone specialized training in Gerti Motelli’s model of electrical stimulation, known for its clinical precision and success in treating individuals with neurological and neuromuscular disorders.
What Is Electrical Stimulation Therapy?
Electrical Stimulation Therapy (commonly referred to as E-Stim) involves the application of mild electrical currents to specific muscles or nerves via surface electrodes placed on the skin. These currents mimic the natural signals of the nervous system, encouraging muscle contraction or nerve activation, even when voluntary control is limited or lost.
E-Stim is non-invasive, safe, and customized to the individual’s needs. It can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with hands-on physiotherapy, functional training, aquatic therapy, or gait rehabilitation.
How Can E-Stim Help Individuals with Neurological and Neuromuscular Conditions?
Whether due to Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, or Peripheral Nerve Injury, E-Stim therapy offers multiple therapeutic benefits:
Neuromuscular Re-education
E-Stim helps “remind” the muscles and nervous system how to work together. By delivering rhythmic, controlled electrical impulses, we can retrain muscles to contract in a coordinated and functional way, promoting more effective movement patterns.
Muscle Strengthening & Prevention of Atrophy
In individuals with reduced mobility or voluntary control, muscles can weaken or atrophy over time. E-Stim stimulates the muscle directly, helping maintain or improve strength and bulk, especially in weak or denervated muscles.
Improved Motor Control and Functional Independence
By incorporating E-Stim into functional tasks—such as reaching, standing, or walking—we enhance motor learning and encourage carryover into real-life activities. This approach aligns with the Gerti Motelli method, which emphasizes purposeful, movement-based stimulation in context.
Support for Respiratory and Trunk Control
For clients with weakened trunk or respiratory muscles, E-Stim can be applied to abdominal or intercostal muscles to improve breathing patterns, core control, and postural stability—critical for communication, balance, and feeding.
Reduction in Spasticity and Improved Joint Mobility
Strategic stimulation of antagonistic muscle groups can help modulate excessive tone, reduce spasticity, and increase range of motion, especially in conditions like spastic diplegia or hemiplegia.
Sensory Integration and Body Awareness
E-Stim provides targeted sensory input, which can be beneficial for individuals with altered sensation or proprioception. This enhanced awareness helps improve coordination, balance, and confidence in movement.
Our Approach: Gerti Motelli’s Model of E-Stim
Our therapists have been trained in Gerti Motelli’s approach, which goes beyond passive stimulation. It integrates:
Is E-Stim Right for You or Your Child?
Electrical Stimulation Therapy is suitable for clients of all ages and abilities, from toddlers with hypotonia to teens and adults recovering from stroke or spinal cord injury. Our team conducts a thorough assessment to determine the best placement, dosage, and goals for each client.
At ATG ,we don’t just treat symptoms—we build function, participation, and hope. With E-Stim now part of our therapy toolkit, we’re excited to help even more clients unlock their full potential.
